Hey Team,
Jim Collins famously wrote, “Good is the enemy of great.” It’s a powerful statement because it identifies the primary reason most people—and most businesses—fail to reach their full potential. It’s not because they are failing; it’s because they are doing well enough.
"Good" is a dangerous place to be. It’s warm, it’s safe, and it’s comfortable. The human brain is biologically wired to seek that comfort and avoid the unknown. Most people will do almost anything to stay in their comfort zone, even when they know, deep down, that there is no growth without discomfort.
The question we have to face this week is: How do we break through the mental block that keeps us tethered to "Good"?
To move from Good to Great, we have to intentionally disrupt our own comfort. Here is how we break through:
Acknowledge the Biological Tax: Recognize that the fear or resistance you feel when trying something new (like a harder lead source or a more aggressive follow-up schedule) is just your brain trying to "protect" you. When you feel that discomfort, tell yourself: “This is what growth feels like.”
Define "Great" Explicitly: You can’t leave "Good" if you don't know where you’re going. What does a "Great" week look like for your business? If "Good" is 5 calls, "Great" is 25. If "Good" is a standard template, "Great" is a personalized video. Define the gap.
Choose Short-Term Pain for Long-Term Gain: Staying in the comfort zone is a trade-off: you get peace today in exchange for stagnation tomorrow. To break the block, you have to value your future success more than your current convenience.
Audit Your Standards: Often, we stay at "Good" because our environment allows it. Look at your daily habits. Are they designed to keep you safe, or are they designed to push you?
This week, I challenge each of you to find one area of your business where you’ve become "comfortable." Whether it’s your prospecting, your presentation, or your follow-up—identify where you are settled in at "Good" and do the one uncomfortable thing required to move it toward "Great."
Growth lives right on the other side of that mental block. Let’s go get it.
Finish this week strong, take some time to disconnect completely, celebrate Easter weekend and let's hit the ground running on Monday!
